More than 5,000 people turned up last night to pray for Malaysia
at Dataran Merdeka in light of the recent tragedies
that had struck the nation this year.
The prayer, held in conjunction with 57-years of the country’s
independence by the Communication and
Multimedia Ministry with the cooperation of the Kuala Lumpur Municipal Council (DBKL) and TV Al-Hijrah, was held in a solemn note.
It was to mark the death of the 298 passengers and crews of the
downed Malaysian Airliner, MH17 and the missing MH370.
A handful of Selawat and Qasidah performances were
held as well with one performed by Habib Syech Abdul Qadir
Assegaaf from Indonesia
Dubbed the curtain raiser for this year’s Merdeka day celebrations,
the event kicked off at 6pm with Zikr followed by the Solat Maghrib,
Solat Isyak led by the Masjid Wilayah Persekutuan imam Haji Zakariah Isa and followed by several religious performances.
The event saw majority of the participants wearing black attire,
with many men decked in black shirts and robes while
the women wore black hijab, to mourn the two tragedies.
There were also several participants who held
Palestinian flags to show their solidarity with Gaza.
Several stalls selling Palestinian flags and scarves were seen as well.
Present were Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.
